The Kachkin were founded by Imperial Air Force pilots who fled the Core after the kind of orders the player will eventually be given. Two generations later, they are a sovereign nation with their own military, their own civic infrastructure, and their own home — the Gutter, a heavily cratered planet whose violet gas layer blocks every Imperial scan. They share the Core's hardware base but not its values. They are pilots who became a state.
